Criticality acceleration
ENGINEERING CRITICALITY
ASSESSMENT ACCELERATION
The Challenge
The Client was preparing to take over the operation of the forward supply depots delivering materiel support to the Armed Forces of Ukraine (UKR AF), supporting 10 platform types that had been Granted in Kind (GiK'd) by the UK. They had a key requirement to understand how they should prioritise their up-front purchases of ES Materiel items to maintain optimal supply of battle-winning support, whilst maintaining a lean supply chain. The company’s engineers had performed a criticality assessment for spares for one platform type but had not yet started the time demanding process of expanding this to the remaining 9 types, which was key to delivery.

unnecessary NSNs identified for removal
The Squarcle Solution
- Squarcle applied Machine Learning (ML) to complete the assessment for nine platform types
- Our SC experts worked with our data scientists to identify the best data to train the model on
- A bespoke Neural Network approach was selected as most appropriate for this problem set
- Squarcle’s internal assessment showed over 75% confidence against training data
- Client’s engineering team estimated better than 95% accuracy
- ML solution delivered within one week of solution method selection
The Results
- All 5670 NSNs in scope assigned criticality rating
- 984 NSNs (including CR2) identified as high criticality
- 305 NSNs (including CR2) identified for removal from scope
- Delivery of our full SC model, prioritized by battle-winning critical items was enabled
- Significant time savings were delivered, for the project, and the client’s high value engineers
- The SC model was delivered to Client’s SC SMEs to support prioritization of c.£60m initial spend
